Harrow on the Hill
Harrow on the Hill is the area situated at the brow of the hill in the Greater London Borough of Harrow. From the top of the hill, you are able to view the surrounding county of Middlesex and of course London. The name Harrow derives from the name given to the heathen temple, or ‘hergae Gumeninga’ the top of the hill. It was also noted as being named Harrow Atte Hille as recorded as early as 1398. The name Harrow on the Hill also denotes the parish in which St Mary’s church lies. The area was famed as where King Charles I stopped with his troops on his way to surrender to the Scottish Army at Southwell as he fled from Oxford. On the 27 April 1646, King Charles stopped at Harrow on the Hill, so that he could take a final glimpse at London and also to water his horses. A spring below Grove Hill Road has ever since been called King Charles’ Well.
Fame
Harrow on the Hill is home to the famous Harrow School. There has been a school on the site since 1243. However, the Harrow School of today was founded in 1572 by John Lyon under a Royal Charter of Elizabeth I. A number of royalty, prime ministers, members of parliament, and important figures in the arts and sciences have attended the school. Close to the school, down the high street lies The Castle Public House. There has been a pub there since 1716. The current building dates back to 1901 and is a listed building with traditional features. The Castle pub includes open fires and an extensive garden hidden behind the pub. Harrow on the Hill underground station is served by the Metropolitan line and also Chiltern Railways overground trainline.
